TV critics took on Animal Planet\u2019s Finding Bigfoot<\/em> during a contentious panel at the Television Critics Association\u2019s semi-annual press tour in Beverly Hills on Thursday.<\/p>\n

For those who haven\u2019t seen the show, it\u2019s a bit like Syfy\u2019s Ghost Hunters, <\/em>only an expert team looks for Sasquatch instead of spooks. There are interviews, data crunching, mysterious footprints and a group hunting in the woods \u2026 but no actual bigfoot.<\/p>\n

The press tour reporters have spent nearly two weeks in a hotel interviewing actors and executives promoting TV shows. So when Animal Planet rolls out this panel the critics are, understandably, thinking: Show us bigfoot or GTFO. <\/em><\/p>\n

A critic points out: If these guys actually find bigfoot, such huge news is not going to really stay quiet until a regular episode of Finding Bigfoot <\/em>airs. One asks: Has Animal Planet run out of real animals to do shows about? Yet another wonders: First Animal Planet airs a mermaids special, now this \u2014 isn\u2019t Animal Planet damaging its brand with this stuff?<\/p>\n

Animal Planet\u2019s president, Marjorie Kaplan, is good humored about the situation. \u201cAnimal Planet has many shows about animals that may be more familiar to you,\u201d she says. \u201cFinding Bigfoot<\/em> is an exploration of the secret corners of the planet \u2026 There are places on this planet that we know about and places we don\u2019t \u2026\u00a0 New species are being found all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also points out the network\u2019s Mermaids: The Body Found<\/em> special* got \u201cextraordinarily\u201d high ratings.<\/p>\n

The Finding Bigfoot<\/em> team, however, is far less amused by the critics\u2019 skepticism. Seems there\u2019s a lot of anecdotal evidence pointing to the existence of bigfoot and this crew are true believers. (There is more than one bigfoot, they say, and they mostly come out at night \u2026 mostly\u2026)<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve had one 15 feet away growling at me,\u201d declares bigfoot researcher Matt Moneymaker. \u201cSo that\u2019s why I think it\u2019s [unfortunate] when people say they\u2019re not real. They exist \u2026 I don\u2019t think people realize how many witnesses there are out there \u2026 For those who don\u2019t think these things exist, [famed primatologist] Jane Goodall thinks they exist** \u2014 and she may know a little more about it than you do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t equate bigfoot with mermaids,\u201d bristles bigfoot researcher James \u201cBobo\u201d Fay. \u201cYou\u2019re ignorant of the subject matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

So is there solid real evidence of bigfoot?<\/p>\n

Absolutely, they say. There\u2019s all kinds of evidence! Except, you know, an actual or former bigfoot.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s every kind of evidence that they exist,\u201d Moneymaker says. \u201cExcept bones. Except a carcass.\u201d<\/p>\n
